Brian and Janet Brode Establish Endowed Scholarship and Further Its Impact with an Estate-Plan Gift

Brian Brode, ’83, says he chose to attend EKU because of the high quality of its on-campus life, its challenging academics and, particularly, its top-ranked ROTC program. “EKU provided a nurturing environment where I could thrive academically and personally,” he said. “EKU changed my life and ultimately the trajectory of my family’s future.”

With a shared goal of empowering students to grow as leaders and make meaningful contributions to their communities and careers, Brian and his wife of 29 years, Janet, have established the EKU Army ROTC Rendezvous with Destiny Endowed Scholarship. To further the power of their giving, the couple has also included a legacy gift in their estate plan directed to the scholarship.

“My family wants to have a lasting impact on the lives of Army ROTC cadet-students in their education and service to our country,” said Brian who, as a student, served in the EKU Army ROTC Ranger Company as its company commander and has remained involved via his service on the EKU Foundation Board of Directors.

“Attending EKU gave me opportunities for hands-on leadership experience and decision-making skills that shaped my military service, business success, and personal life,” Brian said. “EKU helped me grow into adulthood and make lifelong friendships, and I want to give back to ensure future students have similar opportunities to succeed.”

Brian encourages others to consider the legacy they could leave to support future Colonels. “Our time alive is short, but it is possible for our good works to last long after we have departed,” he concluded. “By making an estate-plan gift, you’re giving future students the same opportunities that helped shape your own success. Your contribution not only honors your own life’s journey but helps build a legacy that supports the community for years to come.”
